Heteronormativity and Media, tl;dr
Nov. 8th, 2011 10:20 pmIn discussion with a friend of mine over dinner, the idea of heteronormativity in media came up, and we realised just how damaging the cycle of gay representation on TV can be right now.
Gay relationships on TV are one of two things. Either they're part of a punchline ('Haha! They're gay! Isn't the fact they're gay funny!' Even if it's not usually that explicit, ask yourself if the joke would still be a joke if the couple/person were heterosexual, and you'll see what I mean), which is usually what happens to minor characters, or it's a big production that They're Gay And It's Okay And Look At How Gay They Are!
